The May Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Union League of Philadelphia located at 140 South Broad Street in Philadelphia, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:30 pm. All ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30 with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The guest speaker will be Jim Mundy, the League’s Director of Education and Programming and its art curator.
Mr. Mundy will conduct a guided tour that will include the League’s history, art, and architecture. Jim will also provide a Curator’s Talk about rare and unique items from the League’s archives, ranging from the iconic to the unusual, including an original copy of the Leland-Boker Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln, William Seward, and John Nicolay; the Tanner Manuscript, the only hand-written eyewitness testimony to Lincoln’s assassination; and a piece of the undershirt President Lincoln was wearing when he was shot, and later died. After the presentation, members and their guests may tour the facility on their own.
The Union League was founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln. The League has hosted US presidents, heads of state, industrialists, entertainers and dignitaries from around the globe. The League’s distinguished collection of art and artifacts is recognized by historians and art experts as a valuable component of American history.
