Class Descriptions:
One Hour CPE Class:
This One Hour CPE “Introduction to Cost Segregation for Appraisers” provides a comprehensive overview of how appraisers can work with Cost Segregation Professionals to produce Quality Cost Segregation Studies. Presented in a clear, practical format, the session introduces the key principles of cost segregation, including the reclassification of property assets into personal property (Section 1245) and real property (Section 1250) categories.
Participants learn how cost segregation studies align with IRS guidelines and how these studies can significantly reduce taxable income by shortening depreciation schedules from 39 or 27.5 years to 5, 7, or 15 years. The class emphasizes the critical role appraisers play in supporting engineering-based studies through credible valuation techniques and defensible allocations.
Topics covered include the history and legal basis of cost segregation, asset identification methods, the impact of tax law changes, and documentation standards. Appraisers leave with a clear understanding of how to contribute to the cost segregation study process. Presented by Walter O’Connell ME, ASA.
Whiskey Tasting:
Join whiskey enthusiast and certified taster Walter O’Connell for a fast-paced, flavorful introduction to American whiskey. In just 30 minutes, this class offers a light yet informative overview of America’s most iconic spirit. Perfect for beginners or casual drinkers, the session explores the basics of whiskey production, regional distinctions, and what makes bourbon, rye, and Tennessee whiskey unique.
Walter, who holds an associate degree in Whiskey Tasting from Whiskey University, brings humor, history, and a passion for whiskey education to the class. Participants will enjoy a guided tasting of six carefully selected American whiskeys—each representing a different style or region.
The tasting is structured to help attendees compare mash bills, flavor profiles, and aging techniques, all while learning how to nose, sip, and evaluate whiskey with confidence. While the dive is shallow, the experience is rich—leaving members with a better appreciation of the diversity and complexity within American whiskey.
Sip, learn, and enjoy—no prior whiskey knowledge required!
