7-Hour National USPAP Update Course

The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers will sponsor an all-discipline National USPAP 2014-2015 7-hour Update Course on Thursday, November 20, 2014 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  The course will be held at the Marriott SpringHill Suites, 430 Plymouth Rd, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462 (Phone: 610-940-0400).  The instructor will be Robert J. Luciani, ASA.  Sign-in starts at 8:30am.

USPAP2014 2015The National USPAP Update Course from the Appraisal Foundation is a one-day course that focuses on recent changes to USPAP requirements for ethical behavior and competent performance by appraisers.  This course, which clarifies several commonly misunderstood aspects of USPAP, will aid appraisers in all areas of appraisal practice seeking updated USPAP competency, including those subject to state licensing or certification and continuing education requirements imposed by professional organizations, client groups, or employers. 

This course is required for all State Licensed or Certified Real Property Appraisers and Assessors.

The cost of the 1-day course is $135 per person and includes a student manual, coffee breaks and snacks.  The USPAP 2014-2015 book is available to attendees at the discounted price of $60. Attendees must either purchase the book or bring a laptop with Internet access to class.

Seating is limited, so please register early for the course, which meets the USPAP continuing education requirements for most appraisers, including the ASA requirement of one 7-hour USPAP update course every five years for accredited (AM, ASA, FASA) appraisers.

September Meeting: Private Company Valuation Trends

The September Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:00 pm; all ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30.

bob wegbreitThe guest speaker will be Bob Wegbreit, one of three partners in the West Conshohocken firm of GF Data Resources, LLC. GF Data provides valuation data on middle-market transactions backed by private equity. He will talk about “Private Company Valuation Trends: 2014 Mid-Year State of the Lower Middle Market.”

Mr. Wegbreit is a marketing and strategy specialist working in categories of printing and publishing, web-based business solutions, home services and channel distribution. He has a B.S. from Boston University, and was a Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Dismar Corporation, a national point-of-sale advertising manufacturer.

Bob will discuss proprietary valuation and cost of capital information from GF Data’s mid-year benchmarking reports. The reports, considered among the most reliable, describe completed acquisitions valued between $10-250 million. They include confidential transaction details contributed by over 220 North American private equity firms.

May Meeting: Art, History & Fine Dining at the Union League

The May Chapter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Union League of Philadelphia located at 140 South Broad Street in Philadelphia, PA. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:30 pm. All ASA members are welcome. The general meeting starts at 6:30 with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The guest speaker will be Jim Mundy, the League’s Director of Education and Programming and its art curator.

Union League in PhiladelphiaMr. Mundy will conduct a guided tour that will include the League’s history, art, and architecture. Jim will also provide a Curator’s Talk about rare and unique items from the League’s archives, ranging from the iconic to the unusual, including an original copy of the Leland-Boker Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln, William Seward, and John Nicolay; the Tanner Manuscript, the only hand-written eyewitness testimony to Lincoln’s assassination; and a piece of the undershirt President Lincoln was wearing when he was shot, and later died. After the presentation, members and their guests may tour the facility on their own.

The Union League was founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln. The League has hosted US presidents, heads of state, industrialists, entertainers and dignitaries from around the globe.  The League’s distinguished collection of art and artifacts is recognized by historians and art experts as a valuable component of American history.

  • Men. Jacket and tie. Jacket and collared shirt are required at all times on the first floor members-only section of the League House.

February Meeting: Auctions and Appraisals

The February Meeting of the ASA Northern NJ Chapter will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 6:00 pm at Maggiano’s, 70 Riverside Square Mall, Hackensack, NJ 07601 (Phone: 201-221-2040) [Map]. The Executive Meeting is scheduled for 6:00 pm followed by Dinner at 7:00. The guest speaker is Mitchell Caspert, Esq., a principal of Caspert Auctioneers & Appraisers in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Mr. Caspert will discuss “Overcoming Your Seller’s Bloated Expectations.”

mitchellcaspertMitchell Caspert, who took his B.S. at Syracuse University and his J.D. at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law. enjoyed a 20-year career supervising the administration of attorneys and legal professionals at two prominent New York City law firms. After 9/11. he returned to the family business, while maintaining his interest in the law and technology.

Mr. Caspert has lectured attorneys about technology, and has moderated Ask A Lawyer, a weekly metro area television program. A popular speaker at financial seminars, trade groups and professional associations, he is an expert on the auction & appraisal business.

The program qualifies for two hours of ASA Continuing Education Credit. March Meeting: Buy-Sell Agreements

The general meeting starts at 6:30. The guest speaker will be Curtis L. Golkow, Esq. of the eponymous Philadelphia firm of Golkow Business Law LLC. Mr. Golkow will discuss “Buy-Sell Agreements.”

GolkowMr. Golkow, who holds a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of Business and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, has drafted and negotiated many buy-sell agreements, including model buy-sell provisions for Pennsylvania LLCs as a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s PA LLC Forms Committee Task Force. He has also served as an expert witness regarding buy-sell agreements, and is a frequent speaker and lecturer on the topic.

Because appraisers and attorneys are often among the first professionals consulted whenever a business is bought or sold, Mr. Golkow’s presentation is sure to be of interest to ASA members in virtually all disciplines. Free Seminar on USPAP 2014-15 Changes

USPAP2014 2015The Philadelphia ASA Chapter will offer a free seminar — USPAP 2014-15 Changes Effective January 1, 2014 — on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Plymouth Meeting, PA. The seminar will be conducted by Chapter President Robert J. Luciani, ASA, an AQB Certified USPAP Instructor.

The seminar will summarize USPAP changes and revisions that went into effect January 1, 2014 and which impact every practicing appraiser. It qualifies for 1.5 hours of Continuing Education Credit (CEC) for ASA members.

The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) will hold its annual Business Valuation Seminar at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in Plymouth Meeting, PA on Friday, May 2, 2014.  The program includes sessions focused on

  • Valuation and Investing in the Face of Uncertainty
  • Cost of Capital using Duff & Phelps given Morningstar’s Exit
  • Tax Perspectives and Fair Market Value.
